We sew a delicate fabric headband. How to sew a headband for a girl from an old T-shirt DIY knitted headband

Hello, dear readers! In this review, the site “Kabluchok.ru” will show and tell you how to make a headband with your own hands. The finished headband can be tied in two ways: with a knot on the top of the head (pin-up style) or with ties at the back. By the way, a headband with a knot on the top of the head is now incredibly popular. It looks great with sundresses, jeans, plaid shirts, open tops, white T-shirts, flared dresses and plain cropped trousers.

DIY headband made of fabric.

Necessary materials:

  • A piece of fabric.
  • Scissors.
  • Sewing pins.
  • Measuring tape.
  • Iron.
  • Sewing machine.
  • Wooden skewer.
  • Threads.

How to sew a headband.

Cut out two identical strips of fabric, 90 cm long and 3 cm wide. Then they need to be ironed. Lay them one on top of the other and use scissors to create pointed ends on each side.

After that, the strips need to be laid one on top of the other with their right sides, and pinned with sewing pins.

Now the stripes need to be stitched around the perimeter, not forgetting to leave the hole in the center unstitched.

At this stage, it is necessary to trim the ends of the future bandage from the inside.

Now you can turn the product inside out. To do this, take a wooden skewer, place it on the tip of the bandage and push the material towards the central hole. You need to do the same with the other tip. And use a skewer to straighten the ends of the bandage from the inside.

So, the bandage is turned right side out, now it needs to be ironed.

Well, finally, the bandage needs to be stitched around the perimeter, so you can sew up the very central hole thanks to which it was possible to turn it out.

That's it, the headband is ready! All that remains is to tie it up and admire your reflection in the mirror.

How to sew a “Solokha” headband (video):

Now you know how to make a headband with your own hands. And you probably noticed that making such a bandage couldn’t be easier! You can definitely do it!

The “trick” of such a headband is that when using different fabrics, it turns out to be double-sided, and it can be worn as two different headbands. The main thing is to carefully process all the seams and remove the ends of the threads so that the work looks neat from all sides.

You will need:

2 or more types of fabric for the headband (it is better to choose fabric of similar quality and density, and in different matching colors);

Elastic tape;

Scissors;

Sewing machine;

Lace and safety pin.

1. Measure the circumference of your head and create a pattern. Keep in mind that the back of the headband will be gathered with elastic.

2. Add a centimeter for seam allowances and cut out 4 headband pieces from different fabrics.

3. Place the pieces right sides together and stitch as shown in the photo.

4. Attach a safety pin to the end of the cord and turn the pieces out using this design.

5. Iron the inside out part of the back of the headband and stitch along both long sides, leaving about 0.7 cm.

6. Determine the length of elastic you will need. Thread the elastic through the back of the headband. Stitch several times on one side. Assemble the part with an elastic band and secure it on the other side in the same way.

7. Iron the front of the bandage. Fold the edges of the fabric from the unsewn sides inward, as shown in the photo.

8. Place the back piece of the headband into the front piece and stitch several times as shown in the photo. Repeat on the other side. Ready!

2. Hair band made of fabric with an elastic band: master class

In fact, this is a slightly lighter version of the bandage from the previous master class. The difference here is that you will need a wider elastic band (at least 2 cm wide). An elastic band with some kind of decor (colored, with gold or silver thread, etc.) will look good.

You will need:

Colored elastic tape of medium width (2−3 cm);

Scissors;

Pins;

Sewing machine.

1. Decide on the length and width of the future bandage. Create a pattern - you need one piece (you can use the diagram from Master Class 1 as a guide). Cut out two identical pieces of the headband, not forgetting the seam allowances.

2. Pin the pieces right sides together. Tuck and iron the seams on the short sides as shown in the photo.

3. Place an elastic band between the pieces and stitch as shown in the photo.

4. Turn the bandage inside out.

5. Iron the bandage.

6. Fold the seam allowances of the free short side inwards and press. Place the second edge of the elastic band inside and machine stitch. Ready.

3. Wide knitted headband: master class

You will need:

Knitted fabric;

Sewing machine;

Scissors;

Threads, needle.

1. Focusing on the desired length and width of the headband, create a pattern and cut out a piece from knitwear, as shown in the photo. Don't forget about seam allowances.

2. Fold the piece in half lengthwise, right sides inward, and stitch.

3. Turn the bandage inside out, fold the edges of the unsewn sides inward and sew by hand or by machine.

4. Leather headband: master class

This headband can be made from either natural or artificial leather. In this case, the material used is from an old handbag - perhaps you will use an unnecessary piece of leather or a strap.

You will need:

Artificial or genuine leather;

Elastic tape (preferably in skin color);

Durable glue;

Scissors;

Sewing machine;

1. Cut out leather parts in the form of two strips.

2. Form and glue a bow from one of the strips, as shown in the photo. Glue the bow to the second strip in the center.

3. Make cuts on the edges of the leather part of the future headband. Thread an elastic band through them and stitch them together as shown in the photo. Ready!

5. Hairband with fabric flowers: master class

Depending on the fabric you choose, the headband can turn out to be delicate and romantic or a bright and noticeable accessory. The raw edges of the fabric will give the work a slight carelessness and originality.

You will need:

Thick fabric for the base of the bandage;

Thin fabric for decoration (chiffon, silk);

Several beads;

A pair of regular hair ties;

Tailor's pins;

Scissors;

Needle and thread;

Sewing machine.

1. Decide on the length and width of the bandage. Cut out the base piece on the bias.

For little ladies, designers create children's brands of fashionable clothing and accessories. One of the latest trends is head decoration. Even an ordinary outfit for little ones can be made festive.

A headband is a universal accessory for girls of all ages at any time of the year. Regardless of its purpose (warming, sports, hair fixation), it will look fashionable. This season, the family look style is trending. That is, parents and child have similar hairstyles, colors or clothing elements.

A great example is fashionista moms with newborn daughters and matching headbands. Many people, when discharged from the maternity hospital, put on the girl not the usual cap or cap, but a stylish bandana. A baby with a fashionable headband decorated with bows, ribbons or flowers is a stunning photo keepsake.

This accessory can be made or sewn with your own hands. Making a bandage does not require much time or professional skills. But the decoration, in which your creative ideas are invested, will be handmade by the author.

Fabric headbands

Depending on the purpose, material, shape and decor, the names are different - headband, turban, solokha, elastic band, hoop, bandana, headphones, etc. The uniqueness of the headband is in a variety of style trends - sports, classic, vintage, Greek, doll, thematic.

Models for infant girls are a work of art, often representing compositions of openwork with a flower. Skilled needlewomen manage to create a beautiful, unusual headband even from nylon tights.

Main types:

  • narrow headbands - ribbons, laces or braids to decorate a Greek hairstyle for a girl;
  • wide – sporty, for cold weather or fixing thick, curly, long curls;
  • synthetic materials - usually used to decorate headbands;
  • summer - made of cotton, tulle, knitwear, lace, chiffon, stretch, denim, silk, organza and other thin fabrics;
  • warm - headbands made of fur, cashmere or acrylic yarn, wool, velvet, felt.

Let's take a closer look at the different shapes and decors of fashion accessories for girls.

Headscarves

This is the simplest, but very elegant type of headband. A thin scarf can be folded or twisted. You can wrap it around your head and tie a bow or knot on the side or top. This season, a headscarf is a must-have for a little girl. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a designer scarf or a democratic option from a mass-produced line.

It is better to wear a headband in its original form, like our grandmothers. If you do designer embroidery, paint it using the batik technique, or trim it with beads (rhinestones, buttons), then even a baby girl will look like a real fashionista.

Ribbons

This material is most suitable for decoration. Rep, satin, airy stripes are used for weaving or different techniques for making flowers. Can be worn as a stand-alone hair decoration.

Solokha

This is a boho chic headband that has a flexible base with wire inside. It is securely and easily attached to the head with one movement of the hand. Simply twist the ends of the bandage to form a knot or bow. This is a very convenient accessory for the head, especially if the girl is mobile. The headband is firmly held on the hairs, without falling off even with strong wind, running or active movements.

For young girls, solokha is usually performed without wire. It is better to use knitwear for the headband, which, due to its properties, sits well on the head. Retro pin-up style can be done simply: gather your curls in a high bun and put a solokha on top of your hair. Tie a pretty bow at the front or side.

Rubber bands

Newborn photo smile
beautiful headband

The optimal choice is a thick headband 15 mm wide. Rubber bands come in glitter, plain, multi-color, and printed. The material is very soft, stretches well and does not squeeze the head. Often, even for newborn girls, elements for insertion are cut out of it, and for older princesses you can make a completely rubber headband.

Bandanas

If you fold the scarf diagonally, you get a triangle scarf. The bandana is tied on the girl’s head in the usual way, but a double knot is formed not under the chin, but at the back (above the free edge).

There are ready-made products for sale. You can create your own masterpiece of a headband with embroidery or other original decor.

Turban

The peculiarity of this bandage is a wide strip with a twisted knot in the center of the front. It may have one twist. In this option, a two-color solution looks most stylish - small peas on the left, large polka dots on the right.

A head turban can be made with two or more twisted links, moving the center slightly to one side. The accessory is easy to sew or knit with your own hands. Older girls often wear it on their head instead of a warm hat. For babies, it is better to choose bright colors or the color of clothes.

Turban

Because of the drawstring in the center, many people confuse this headband with a turban. However, there is a significant difference. The turban does not have a twist; the center accent is made either by a hidden thread or decoration (ring, large buckle, brooch). Head models decorated with stones, beads, and metal elements look very stylish.

A large knit turban in an oversized style is suitable for cold weather, and any fabric is suitable for summer.

Fatin

This is a transparent shell, an almost weightless mesh, immersing the girl in a fairy tale. The fabric is produced in any color of the rainbow; it can shimmer, shine or be matte. There are canvases with etched, embroidered or three-dimensional designs on sale.

The mesh is ideal for decorating headbands for girls. It can be sprayed with silver or golden shades. Many craftswomen trim fabric with sequins, rhinestones, pearls, beads or appliqués.

Headbands in the form of headphones

This stylish accessory is easy to make with your own hands. This is a regular headband with fur pompoms attached. You can sheathe and decorate the base or elements for insulating the ears.

Sports headband

This option is made of elastic material that fits tightly to the head and absorbs moisture well. Such headbands are usually produced with the logos of famous sports brands. This is a must-have for girls who are interested in dancing, tennis, running or any other type of active leisure.

Bows

Such head models are adored by very little children or elementary school girls. There are a lot of dressing options. One large or miniature bow, corrugated, double, with an elastic band, rim, hoop, or formed from soft ends. For little girls, they are often embroidered with miniature elements.

Headbands with ears

The rabbit band style model looks funny and unusual. More often these are knitted or knitted headbands, decorated with the ears of a rabbit, giraffe, panda, frog, fox, etc. A frame is inserted into a thin fabric; woolen ones hold their shape well.

DIY baby headbands

The decoration is easy to make yourself if you follow the instructions. For a newborn girl, it is better to take openwork lace 1-4 cm wide. For a baby from 6 months to a year, you can prepare a soft elastic band up to 2-3 cm. For older girls, a regular plastic headband, which needs to be covered with a beautiful fabric, is suitable.

Step-by-step instructions for a headband with flowers.

  1. Measure the girl's head, cut off the piece with a margin of 1 cm.
  2. The lace is sewn together; a beautiful elastic band can be left as a base or inserted into the fabric.
  3. To do this, fold the material in half face down and cut out strips using a slight tack.
  4. Sew along the edge line, turn it inside out, insert an elastic band into the bandage, and sew.
  5. For a solid rim, the workpiece is made in the same way; measurements are taken based on the base.
  6. Start decorating.
  7. You need a soft fabric; stretch knitwear in bright colors works well.
  8. Cut several strips of different widths, approximately 60 cm long.
  9. Sew large zigzags by hand or by machine.
  10. Gently pull the thread so that you get corrugated pieces of fabric.
  11. Twist each piece, starting from one end, into a flower and secure with thread. You can place beautiful beads in the middle.
  12. You should end up with several elements of different sizes and colors.
  13. Cut out green leaves from felt, velvet or other base.
  14. You can make one composition from flowers or scatter them throughout the rim.
  15. There are two decoration options - glue it with a gun or sew it with a needle and thread.
  16. The accessory is ready.

Felt headband: master class

Provided you follow the steps correctly, it will only take one hour to create a charming floral headband. Change the shape of the petals, placement and color of the bandage according to your preferences.

Prepare:

  • pastel colors of felt, a chic combination of white + gray + pink;
  • scissors;
  • needle and thread;
  • glue (preferably hot);
  • cardboard.

Step-by-step instructions for making a bandage for a girl with your own hands.

  1. The base, that is, the rim itself, can be made in any way. Rely on the previous instructions.
  2. Preparing the pattern.
  3. On the cardboard, draw 2 oblong petals (one smaller, the other a little larger), the top is rounded, the bottom is straight.
  4. Using these patterns, you need to cut out 8 + 8 pieces of different sizes from pink felt.
  5. Make a sketch of the leaves; one larger + two smaller, pointed top, straight bottom.
  6. Make 3 sheets of gray felt.
  7. Prepare two ordinary flowers from white material, one larger.
  8. The last detail of the bandage is the middle.
  9. You need a piece of fabric approximately 7 cm long and 3-4 cm wide.
  10. Fold a piece of gray felt in half, make cuts at a distance of about 3 mm without bringing the scissors to the edges.
  11. All that remains is to connect all the details of the bandage.
  12. Watch carefully: white flowers first, the smaller one overlaps on top.
  13. Then glue pink petals, first row 8 pcs. bigger size.
  14. Unfold the middle of the bandage, you get this curly little thing, fit it on top.
  15. Baste the gray felt leaves in large stitches, placing the largest one in the center. Pull the thread so that the shamrock comes out.
  16. First the leaves are attached to the rim, and the flower on top.

Headband decorations

Decoration can be made from any materials:

  • flowers, bows;
  • fluff, feathers, sparkles, beads, pearls;
  • shells, buttons, pebbles;
  • wooden or metal baubles, fringe, etc.

When making a headband, look at the girl's age. The blanks are usually secured with glue, which makes the work easier. It is recommended to connect the details of dressings for infants with threads.

Flower on head

There are a lot of configurations - roses, daisies, peonies, dandelions, lilies, the list is endless. Much depends on the size of the flower with which you are going to decorate the headband. The larger the part, the better the material should hold its shape.

Experienced craftswomen use felt as a universal fabric for making flower arrangements for headbands. The trend is for thin rubber bands with miniature flowers, buds, or just a scattering of petals.

Kanzashi

This is a Japanese technique for making bows, for which you can use different materials. The authors of kanzashi choose fabrics from organza, tulle and satin ribbons. The point is to combine small fragments into one whole. Each piece is a square folded in a special way. There are many such folding methods.

Foamiran

This is an innovative material and a trendy finished decoration. Foam or foamed plastic rubber easily wrinkles, twists, and when heated makes it possible to create an element of any configuration.

Cooling on the mold (cast mold for three-dimensional parts), the material forms incredibly realistic flowers with all the subtleties of natural plants. Particularly valuable for decorating exclusive accessories.

Beautiful bows

If organza is a traditional option, then in combination with satin ribbons it is a masterpiece. It is no less important to use tulle, which practically does not wrinkle, to make a bow of an original shape.

Crowns

This decoration is often worn on girls under one year old. Typically, crowns are made using different knitting methods. Needlewomen recommend choosing thick yarn so that the shape holds well and looks impressive.

It is relevant to use a crown, but such a crown is worn for a girl’s photo shoot.

What to wear with a headband

Who is comfortable with the trend?

look beautiful

Children's accessories can be combined with any set of clothes. But even for little girls, it is necessary to follow the stylistic alphabet so that the image looks fashionable and charming.

  1. Choose a headband that matches your dress or shoes.
  2. If the outfit is in one of the pastel shades, a contrasting option with an emphasis on the decorative element looks beautiful.
  3. The printed headband echoes the color scheme of the clothes.
  4. A fashion accessory must match the season.
  5. A miniature decorated headband goes well with a laconic outfit; a too voluminous version may look out of place.
  6. Minimal emphasis on decoration is done if the girl is wearing clothes with variegated colors. A monochromatic bandage is ideal so as not to disrupt the integrity of the image.
  7. When purchasing a finished product or making an accessory with your own hands, consider the girl’s age.
  8. The bandage should not press or be uncomfortable for the child.

Already have a child? Or are you just waiting for a new addition to your family? Did your loved ones have a daughter? For this flower of life, you can make a stylish and charming headband as a successful start to your little one's journey in the fashion world! This article will teach you how to make a great headband for babies or toddlers that is completely customizable to suit your specific needs and style.

Steps

Taking measurements and preparation

    Measure your head circumference. To make a headband, you need to know the approximate size. To do this, you can take measurements or use size tables according to the child’s age or weight. When taking your measurements in person, you will need to measure your head circumference approximately where the headband should be worn. Usually the measurement is taken directly above the ears.

    • Babies are very fragile creatures who don't like to sit still, so taking measurements can be a bit of a challenge. If you have a measuring tape, use it to take measurements. Do not use metal tape measures, you may scratch your child and the measurement will not be very accurate. If you don’t have a measuring tape at hand, take a soft string and measure your head circumference with it, and then determine the resulting length with any measuring device.
    • If the baby is not nearby or has not yet been born, you can rely on standard size charts. They can be found on the Internet. Try to find them on websites and forums dedicated to sewing and needlework. It may also be possible to measure the head circumference of another child of similar size and age.
  1. Decide on the size of the product. You need to decide what the width of the product should be. It largely depends on the size of the child who will wear the bandage, since a bandage that is too wide will not fit well on the head and will slip off. A newborn is unlikely to wear a bandage wider than 1 cm. A child 6-12 months old will probably be able to wear a bandage up to 2.5 cm wide. A preschool child will need a bandage up to 5 cm wide.

    • You can check your estimated dimensions before making a decision. Try cutting a strip of the required width from waste fabric and visually see if this width is suitable; or you can try on ready-made store-bought headbands for your child to select the desired width.
  2. Select materials. The materials needed depend on what type of headband you want to make. Since children have soft, delicate skin, it is best to use stretchable, soft materials. Stretch knitwear, corduroy or lace are best for babies. The base of the bandage should be made of this material. There are more options for jewelry since it won't be in as close contact with your baby's skin.

  3. Cut out the material. Having selected the fabric, you will need to cut it. Knitted material must be cut in double width so that it can be sewn with a tube. If you use stretch lace, then doubling the width is not required.

    • For knitwear, corduroy and other dense fabrics, you will need to cut a long rectangle from which the tube will be sewn. First, cut the required length (using the head circumference measurement you took earlier), remembering to add 1cm from each edge to the seam allowance. Then cut to double the width, also lining the seam allowances. Seam allowance must be made on each side.
    • Use the necessary tools. Tailor's scissors are necessary for cutting fabric, as regular dull scissors result in an uneven, unsightly cut of fabric.
  4. Cut off the elastic. Using your baby's head measurement, cut the elastic to the same length. Do not shorten the length of the elastic to create a tight fit on the headband, as part of the length will go into the seam, and you want to maintain as much stretch as possible. Having extra stretch will allow the child to wear the bandage longer and also ensure that the bandage is not too tight.

    Sewing a headband

    Sew the tube. Now you need to sew a tube from the cut piece. The tube will form the base of the dressing. It will go around the circumference of the head, and it is to it that the jewelry will be attached. Make the tube as straight as possible, although due to the stretch of the fabric, most imperfections will not be noticeable.

    • Fold the rectangle of fabric in half lengthwise. If you sew from stretch lace, then this is not required. If using other materials, fold the cut rectangle of fabric in half lengthwise, right sides facing in.
    • Pin the material with straight pins so that the fabric sections lie flat. Pins must be inserted perpendicular to the fabric sections. This will reduce the chance that the machine's needle will hit a pin if you forget it in the fabric. Also, this arrangement of pins makes it possible to sew directly on pins.
    • Sew along the long edges of the fabric, 1cm from the edge. Use a needle, thread and stitch that matches the type of fabric you are using. Knitted fabrics require a special knitting needle and a stretchable zigzag stitch. The same thing can be done manually, but it will take more time.
    • Unscrew the tube. You can do this with your bare hands, but it’s easier to use a simple tool. The most common method is to use a small safety pin. Pin it on one end of the tube from the inside. Slowly begin to thread the pin through the tube. This will take some time, but the procedure itself is simple. Once the tube is inside out, you will need to iron it until it is flat. You can skip ironing if you're going for a looser, draped look.
  5. Insert the rubber band. The elastic will allow the headband to stay on without the need to attach clasps or ties. This will also allow the bandage to grow with your baby. Also make sure you have enough elastic, as a bandage that is too tight will not fit your baby.

    • Thread the rubber band into the tube. The easiest way is to pin a safety pin on one end of the elastic and thread the elastic into the tube. Make sure that when you pull the elastic through the tube, it does not twist inside.
    • Sew the two ends of the elastic by hand or with a sewing machine. It's good to use a zigzag stitch. Again, make sure that the elastic is not twisted and lies flat.
    • Sew the ends of the tube. Although you can use a sewing machine for this step, it is best to do it by hand. Tuck the edges of the tube inward. Using small blind stitches, carefully sew the edges of the tube together. If you don't want to sew by hand, stitch the edges by hand, overlapping them slightly. In this case, the stitching will be visible, unlike hand sewing. When the edges are joined, the bandage is ready!

    Headband decoration

    1. Make a bow. Once the headband is ready, you need to add embellishments to it to complete the look. A bow is a classic decoration for a little girl that is easy to make. This is a good place to start when you first make a headband for your child.

      • For the bow you will need ribbon. Try to get fabric tape, as plastic is not recommended in this case. Choose a ribbon that is the same color as the headband you just made and you'll generally like it.
      • There are different types of bows. You can make a simple bow, similar to the one tied on shoelaces, or you can tie a more complex bow, such as is made on gifts. For a simple bow, just tie it. Use an extra few inches of tape to wrap it around the center and hide the knot. Sew or glue the bow to the headband.
      • For a complex bow, take a whole spool of ribbon. Take one end of the tape and make a loop out of it, about 5 cm long, then another loop on the opposite side. Continue making loops until the bow is full enough. Secure the middle of the bow with stitches and then hide them under an additional piece of ribbon, just like a simple bow. Glue or sew the bow to the headband.
    2. Make a flower. You can decorate the headband with a flower. This looks great on little girls, giving them a fairy look. You can make one flower or many at once. You can use ready-made realistic artificial flowers from pressed fabric by simply gluing them to the headband, or you can make your own flowers.

      • Take strips of fabric 30 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Try to choose a fabric color that contrasts with the headband, but still matches it. Any type of fabric will do, even plain cotton.
      • Stick this cloth onto the pipe cleaner, making it a little uneven. This will give the fabric a slightly draped look.
      • Twist the pipe cleaner into a flower rosette. If there is only one flower, it can be directly glued to the headband. Otherwise, first glue the flower or flowers (according to your intended design) onto a piece of felt. Trim the felt so that it is not visible when looking at the flowers from above, and then glue it to the headband.
      • You can make your own appliqués from felt. Simply draw a shape and cut it out from one or more pieces of felt. You can also do wool felting to create a 3D object and glue or sew it to the headband. It all depends on your skills and desires.
      • You can also use jewelry objects or decorative scrapbooking items to decorate the headband. Sew or glue them if necessary.

    Warnings

    • Children love to put everything in their mouth. Make sure that small parts attached to the bandage are secure.
    • If the bandage is too tight, do not place it on the child's head.
    • Make sure that the bandage does not slip down and get stuck on the child's neck.
